Wide-open spotted bass bite tops mixed-bag opportunity at Naci
BY MIKE STEVENS
CENTRAL COAST – A solid mixed-bag attack is going on right now at Lake Nacimiento, and in the midst of it all, at least one angler topped it off with a double-digit bass that will stand as a new personal best.
“Yes, my wonderful wife Lisa Rice caught a giant 10.06-pound largemouth at Lake Nacimiento,” said Douglas Rice of RGS Guide Service (rgsfish.com). “While fishing for crappie, she caught a male largemouth bass and the female followed it to the boat. We released the male so they would go back to the bed, then we switched rods to a heavy action spinning rod with 20-pound braid and a drop-shot. She threw back in and the giant female immediately ate her drop-shot rig. The worm was a Pro Point Lures Arrow Worm in habanero color. As far as crappie fishing it is slightly slow and we only caught about 10 all afternoon. The spotted bass are on fire, and you can catch 100 of them per person a day no problem. Any technique any lure it doesn’t matter.”
Doug Rice wasn’t done there as far as making scores while fishing his typical Central Coast lakes circuit. He went on to tap Santa Margarita Lake for a 7-pound largemouth and tell Western Outdoor News all those lakes are fishing really well. Rice did mention these unseasonably warm daytime temps ushering in possible heavy algae blooms in certain areas due to the heat and “rotting” shore growth.
