CABO SAN LUCAS— One of the oldest bars in downtown Cabo San Lucas, The Giggling Marlin went up in flames early Saturday morning. The cause of the blaze is still unknown, but it appears to be a total loss of a famous watering hole for anglers, golfers and many other Cabo visitors. Local fire and police crews were on the scene in short order, closing the street for several hours, but they were unable to stop the blaze in time to save the iconic cantina. No injuries were reported.
Located on Marina Boulevard, in some circles – including among staffers of the bar and restaurant – The Giggling Marlin absolutely was Cabo’s first bar. For decades, visitors have come to The Giggling Marlin for it’s fun, casual environment along with food and drinks, and to take one of the most well-known photo ops in Cabo: hanging upside down in front of the sign out front. Patrons of The Giggling Marlin were greeted by the following tongue-in-cheek disclaimer, “If our food, drinks and service aren’t up to your standards, please lower your standards.”
“One of the oldest and most iconic bars in Cabo owned by our friend, Gary Wagner, went up in flames this morning,” said WON Baja columnist, Jonathan Roldan. “The legendary Giggling Marlin holds a lot of memories for al ot of us: getting our photos hanging upside down on the fish scale, dancing in the conga line, doing the macarena. It will be missed. Hopefully, Gary can rebuild bigger and better.”
