After waiting considerably longer than most anglers had ideally hoped for, the striped bass bite finally broke open a week ago and the good action being had on the linesides continued well through this past weekend. Without many boats on the water as of late, it’s been game on for Mead’s jailbirds for the first few hours of the morning for those getting out early and taking advantage of the current bite.
“It’s been awesome – a first-light bite that’s been wide open in Government Wash and 33 Hole with both swimbaits and topwater,” said John Wood at Angler’s Edge Guide Service, who added that there have been some good-sized largemouth to 4 pounds mixed in with the recent striper catch. “Full coolers of stripers has been the norm by 8 or 9 in the morning on most days. Guys are also still getting some live shad in the back of the Wash and doing pretty well with that, along with shore guys who are fishing the live bait and some topwater early too. It’s definitely picked up a lot around here.”
Most of the current jailbirds are schoolies running 1 to 3 pounds, but there have also been some nicer models to 5-plus making appearances of late. Bass fishing remains up and down overall, with the best reported bite up in the Echo Bay and Temple Bar areas along with those fish tailing the stripers down in the lower basin.
