Construction will reshape the waterfront along the Main Channel in the Port of Los Angeles
BY MIKE STEVENS
SAN PEDRO— Set to completely open in spring of 2026, West Harbor – the new L.A. waterfront in San Pedro – will completely reshape and revitalize the already-popular destination with new opportunities for entertainment, dining, retail and recreation. The 42-acre district will sport a mile of direct access to the waterfront, and the centerpiece of the new amenities will be a 6,200-front amphitheater.
Of course, the local sportfishing community is looking forward to the new-look L.A. Waterfront Sportfishing (located right in the middle of the whole project), which will be seriously upgraded from the docks to the landing and even the parking.
Back in 2023, Western Outdoor News talked to President of L.A. Waterfront Sportfishing to talk about the project and what it means to Los Angeles-area anglers.
“It’s going to be a modern waterfront, and it’s going to save time on the road when there are more sportfishing options so those guys won’t have to drive to San Diego,” said Salas. “There’s a revived energy in San Pedro, especially in the downtown area
He went on to say they were throwing a lot of ideas around for the future which could include adding more “high end” sportfishing vessels. Looking long term, having long-range operations working out of San Pedro was also among the goals extracted from early brainstorming sessions.
Currently, West Harbor is listed as “open(ish)” on WestHarborLA.com. L.A Waterfront Sportfishing is still operating at a temporary location with no landing office, but the footprint for the new office is in place, so landing staffers will soon start filling it with guts and making it their own.
“There’s just a shell of an office, but it’s going to be cool,” said Landing Operator, Ryan Gengler. “They laid the slab for that whole (office) area, and we’ve replaced all the docks and reinforced everything.”
The main thing the sportfising operation is waiting for is the new parking lot to open. Construction seems to be complete, but it’s not currently available with all the other West Harbor construction going on. There is parking available nearby that anglers are using, but Gengler thinks once the new lot is open, more of the fishing crowd will pour into the new West Harbor to jump on the Triton, Gail Force, Sport King and possibly some new boats down the line.
“Parking is huge,” said Gengler. “For fishing, all we need is a parking lot.”
