VENTURA – While most trophy bass hunters are waiting for trout stocking to get crackin’ before busting out the big baits, Lake Casitas is already kicking out toads without an ounce of Vitamin T in sight. That point was made by angler Gavin Kwasny who stuck a 14.5 pounder along with a 6.5 for good measure, and he told Western Outdoor News he’s either going with 8- to 12-inch baits or 3- to 4-inch stuff for the few quality bites he’s running into.

“I’ve been going really big or really small, said Gavin Kwasny. The fishing conditions were really calm, sunny with no winds or clouds and about 95 degrees out with water temps in the 75 to 79 range. The fishing is pretty tough because I’m only targeting bigger fish, and I only caught two fish all day but one was a 6.5 pounder and the 14.5. I don’t get many bites, but the ones I get are big. The water is pretty clear, around 10 feet when it’s calm, and the fish are very smart and finicky. You have to have your presentation on point to have a chance at getting a bite.”

And it doesn’t stop there. Late last week, Lake Casitas boat rentals reported an 8.5-pound bucketmouth being caught.
