DANA POINT – We thought it was special, not only because they rarely come up this far, but also because we caught it with Saddleback Mountain in the Background. My fishing buddies and I couldn’t believe it! We are all Saddleback Valley natives, and I have personally lived here my entire life. We have been fishing together since we were young boys on the Reel Fun, Sum Fun, Dana Pride, Fury, Helena, basically the entire Dana Wharf fleet.
We jumped on this open party with Captain Christian of Sekas Sportfishing on his boat the Lex Sea and set out the trolling gear immediately with the hopes of landing something exotic while heading out to look for fish on kelps, and within 30 minutes we were hooked up to a wahoo!
The Southern California Bight has always been phenomenal, but this El Niño has been the icing on the cake for what has been so many good years of yellowtail and tuna fishing. I know that a ton of wahoo have been caught out of San Diego, and a few up and down the coast, but this one was special because of where we caught it and who we were with.
