Trio of Penn Fathom reels up for grabs to monthly winners

SAN CLEMENTE – It goes without saying, 2020 was one heck of a strange and unpredictable year, with just about everyone on the globe having to adjust and adapt to an ever-changing and fluid situation. Western Outdoor News was no different in that regard, but undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year for those of us at WON headquarters was our first-ever readers’ writing contest that ran throughout the springtime.

At the onset of the initial coronavirus shutdown back in March, we sent out the call to our readers to try their hand at writing their favorite outdoors stories for the WON contest, and many of you answered that call in a big way. We received no fewer than 50 (and maybe more) submissions, and the vast majority of them were well-written and really fun reads.

Last year’s contest was such a success and we received nothing but positive feedback from our readers, so we’re bringing the second installment of the writing contest back to kick off the New Year! Starting Jan. 1, the contest will run through March 31. There will be a winner selected for each month of the contest, and those chosen will each claim a brand new Penn Fathom reel along with having the opportunity to be a future contributor for WON moving forward.

So break out that laptop and tell your most memorable fishing or hunting story, break down your favorite techniques or tactics, describe a one-of-a-kind destination adventure, go create a new memory in the early New Year, or drum up any other angle you’d like — it’s really all up to you, so have some fun with it.

Writing contest submissions should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 to 1,000 words (give or take) and send along one or two photos to accompany the story to editors@wonews.com starting Jan. 1, and be sure to put “Writing Contest” in the subject line of your email submission.

Happy holidays from all of us at WON, and we look forward to reading your best stories from the great outdoors!
