DANA POINT – I’m not sure how many stories can start with the fact this trip was as solid as they come. I’m a fan of brevity, plus there are some things towards the end that I need to cover. The annual Western Outdoor News/Fury 2-day was west-bound and down for Tanner Bank. Word on the street was there were tuna and yellowtail in the area. It’s an 8-hour hour drive, here we go.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with biting tuna fish. We cracked 70-ish tuna by 11 a.m. Three hours of mayhem with mean yellowtail mixed in. Once this bite slowed, we moved to Cherry Bank and worked this zone on the troll. We had a flurry at sunset on the fly-line before trying to work the night bite. We managed a few before making the move to SCI where we had a slower morning but stuck some solid calico bass, baby yellows, boners and more. Captain Marcus had 79.8-degree water, which was wild. We fully brimmed the RSW on the boat on Day 1, forcing crew to cut fish the first night just to make room. Even then we still had trouble finding space for bags of fish.
I don’t know how many times I have to say it, but the world-famous Fury is simply a must-fish boat. If you want peak summer fishing trips, you need to book a charter in November the year before. They have rare openings to get on open party. Every year I book my Fury trips the second week of November, and they are sold out by December 1. Get on it and get out there with the Fury Boys.
