Big, 8-boat combined jackpot at stake in this duel between anglers and the 3 famous Scott Street landings

SAN DIEGO — The sixth annual Western Outdoor News San Diego Offshore Jackpot is scheduled for June 25-26 on a fleet of boats representing all 3 Scott Street landings. This long-running contest is an overnight offshore fishing duel between anglers to catch the largest tuna or yellowtail – and with it the combined jackpot estimated at $4,000! It breaks down to $2,100 for first, $1,300 for second and $800 for third.

Anglers have a lucky 8 boats to choose from. Host H&M Landing contenders include the Daiwa Pacific (sold out), Old Glory (sold out), Legend (sold out), and Producer (sold out). The New Lo-An (sold out long ago) and T-Bird (a few spaces available) are fighting for the honor of Point Loma Sportfishing. And out of Fisherman’s Landing, the Tomahawk (sold out) and Condor (filling fast) are ready for the challenge.

As you can see from all the sellouts, interest in the 2020 Offshore Jackpot is running high. Sign up soon, spaces are going quickly! Of course, befitting a Western Outdoor News charter event, there are prizes on hand as well.

The captains take this one very seriously, as they are eager to bring home the bragging rights accorded to the San Diego Offshore Jackpot champion, and to win the perennial trophy for their landing.

About this time, we’d be talking about the latest offshore news, but with the San Diego fleet still tied to the dock (but not much longer), it’s a bit of a mystery what’s happening within overnight range. Private boaters have been taking cracks at bruiser bluefin and yellowfin, so it could be good. Who knows? All we can really say is bluefin are expected to be the major players at the Offshore Jackpot once again, but what grade?

The anglers will earn the bulk of the spoils. The combined jackpot will be split between the anglers catching the heaviest three qualifying fish. But there’s more, a special opportunity to load up on prizes. If you win, you could win big via the Daiwa Contingency. Here’s how it works.

Catch your fish with a new Daiwa rod or reel and win a $1,000 Daiwa shopping spree. Fish any reel spooled with Daiwa J-Braid, and you could win an additional $500 Daiwa shopping spree. Read to the bottom of this story for the full details.

The heaviest fish out of each landing will win a Daiwa Saltist Star Drag mated to a Daiwa Proteus rod. Consider the number of boats from each landing and tally your odds.

Here’s another great prize! Every Capt. will receive a pair of high performance Maui Jim sunglasses, and another pair will go to the jackpot winner on each of the 8 boats.

Every tournament entry is eligible for the Offshore Jackpot raffle, which will feature 3 more Daiwa Saltist Star Drag reels and 3 more Daiwa Proteus rods, as well as some of SKB’s excellent Tak-Pak Backpack Tackle Systems.

CONTINGENCY FISH – WON tournament regular Wade Wells with the 40-pound, third place fish that earned him $615 in cash and another $500 in Daiwa Contingency gift certificates. To get it, all he had to do was spool up with newly purchased J-Braid, and place in the top 3 of course.

There will be bulk spools of Berkley ProSpec monofilament aboard for all anglers to use, everyone will receive a free P-Line Laser Minnow jig, a Frogg Toggs waterproof backpack, and a spool of Hi-Seas Fluorocarbon.

What’s it take to get involved? Just go overnight fishing with WON. $275 per person includes the jackpot buy-in and a raffle entry. Sign-ups are taken via the landings just like a regular open party trip. The boats will depart June 25 at 9 p.m. and return June 26 by 7 p.m.

Just as you like it, every angler must fish for him or herself. The boats won’t kite fish, and it’s against the rules to hook and hand. But take note, every other form of traditional crew assistance is allowed, including help with rigging and of course gaffing fish.

Once again, first through third places will be awarded, and there’s a special opportunity to load up on prizes. If you place, you could win big via the Daiwa contingency. Here’s how it works.

Entry is easy, just book your spot by calling the landings or by booking online. H&M Landing, (619) 222-1144, hmlanding.com; Point Loma Sportfishing, (619) 223-1627, pointlomasportfishing.com; and Fisherman’s Landing, (619) 221-8500, fishermanslanding.com.

2019 Recap

After a banner 2018 when it took a chunky 88-pound bluefin to win, with John Gugliotta of West Hills taking the honors and $2,040 aboard Capt. Markus Medak’s New Lo-An, 2019 proved tougher but it was every bit as competitive.

The heaviest 2019 fish was half the size, 42 pounds, caught by Joseph Rhodes of Hemet on a Flat-Fall. Rhodes, who won $2,050, fished aboard the Old Glory, Capt. Junior Garcia. Garcia was happy to claim the Offshore Jackpot trophy for H&M Landing.

A New Lo-An angler was nipping at Rhodes’ heels. Bruce Fraser of Costa Mesa weighed a 41-pound bluefin, earning $1,435. Another pound and change and the New Lo-An would have had a 3-peat.

Wade Wells of Camarillo finished 3rd with a 40-pound bluefin, also caught on the New Lo-An, with Capt. Andy Williams subbing for an injury sidelined Capt. Medak. Wells earned $615, and nearly doubled his fun by collecting a $500 gift certificate for the Daiwa Contingency by catching his placing fish on J-Braid.

DAIWA IS KICKING in a bunch of great gear for the San Diego Offshore Jackpot, including rods and reels, but the real money is in the Daiwa Contingency. Fish with a new Daiwa reel or rod or with any reel spooled up with J-Braid or J-Fluoro Leader and place and you’ll take home a certificate good for a Daiwa shopping spree worth as much as $1,500. See the story for the details.

Daiwa contingencies are your chance to win big at the WON San Diego Offshore Jackpot

SAN DIEGO — Do you want your Western Outdoor News San Diego Offshore Jackpot win to be really big? Fish with Daiwa!

The company is once again offering special contingency prizes to anglers who finish first, second or third while fishing with specific Daiwa reels and rods purchased this year, right up to the tournament start. It could win you a $1,000 Daiwa shopping spree. Just think what you could bring home!

There’s a second chance to win. Fish with a reel newly spooled up with Daiwa J-Braid and place and you could win a $500 Daiwa shopping spree.

In 2019, Wade Wells of Camarillo finished third (on the New Lo-An), and since he fished with a reel spooled with J-Braid, he won a $500 Daiwa Contingency. Two years earlier he did the same, but he added an extra $1,000 shopping spree by fishing with a new Daiwa reel. You could be next – if Wells doesn’t do it again.

Here are the details:

Fish any of these Daiwa reels and rods in any combination purchased from March 4, 2020 to June 25, 2020 and place to be eligible for a $1,000 Daiwa shopping spree: Saltiga Star Drag, Saltist Star Drag, Lexa WN, Saltiga Spinning, Saltist Spinning, Proteus rods and Proteus WN rods.

Fish Daiwa J-Braidx4, J-Braidx8 or J-Fluoro Leader purchased from March 4, 2020 to June 25, 2020 on any reel and place, and you could win an additional $500 Daiwa shopping spree.

In order to win you must show proof of purchase at tournament sign-in and place in the top 3 at the 2020 WON San Diego Offshore Jackpot. Good luck!
