PUERTO VALLARTA— Boasting a built-in passion for sportfishing, San Diego Fish Processing co-owner Jamie Allen took some time off and headed to Puerto Vallarta to pull on some fish of her own, and she ended up catching a fish of a lifetime.
While fishing out of a small boat out of PV, Allen connected to a monster roosterfish she was able to finally tame after a long battle. She was working with 40-pound line, on a Avet SX5 reel and a 6-foot rod, and when the big rooster was boated, she was blown away and even the crew saw it as something special.
The tale of the tape was as follows: 64 inches long with a 33-inch girth and a weight of 50 kilos. Here in El Norte, 50 kilos means 110.23 pounds.
“I started fishing in 2019 and caught almost every pelagic fish in my first year,” Allen told Western Outdoor News. “This was definitely one of the hardest catches of my life. Our captains said this was the biggest rooster they have ever seen. Gray Taxidermy was called immediately, and he met us at the dock, and he was amazed at the sight of it. Definitely one for the books. I’m still in awe and I cannot wait for my mount to arrive to hang up in our office for everyone to admire.”
According to the IGFA, the all-tackle record for roosterfish was a 114 pounder caught by Abe Sackheim in La Paz in 1960. That fish was also 64 inches long with a 33-inch girth.
