SAN CLEMENTE – The Western Outdoor News charter schedule had a couple of its earlier listings pushed back a few weeks into late May, and for good measure, a couple more out-of-the-ordinary and very cool trips have been added to mid summer.
The 8th annual Rockfish Rumble out of Ventura Sportfishing has been rescheduled to May 21. That very popular competition between anglers on three boats (the Pacific Eagle, Endeavor and Island Spirit) was originally set to run on April 23. All that’s changed is the date; the trips still run from 5a.m. to 4 p.m., and anglers will have access to bulk spools of Daiwa J-Braid, Berkley Pro-Spec monofilament, individual spools of HI-SEAS Grand Slam Bluewater fluorocarbon and P-Line Laser Minnows. Along with a chunk of the three-boat combined jackpot (split three ways for three biggest fish), the winner will also pick up a pair of premium Maui Jim polarized sunglasses. The ticket price is $115 which includes $10 toward the jackpot, and anglers can sign up online (WONews.com, EVENTS tab) or by calling Dylan Depres at (949) 366-0726 for phone reservations or questions.
The first of the new additions to the WON Charters schedule is a “reverse 1.5-day” trip aboard the Pacific Islander out of CISCOS spanning June 22-23. Billed as an “Outer Channel Islands white seabass trip,” the 10 a.m. departure and 6 p.m. (the next day) return means anglers will get to take advantage of the crucial evening/night bite on Day 1, grey light the next morning then fish all day until it’s time to head back to the barn. The standard WON Charter perks listed above apply here, too, along with the Maui Jim sunglasses tacked on to the jackpot haul. This ticket for this one is $400, and it’s limited to 30 anglers. Sign-up at WONews.com (under WON Events), or call or email Dylan Hartnett at (949) 366-0921; dylanh@wonews.com.
Another new trip plugged right into the heart of summer is a Puerto Vallarta-based cow tuna hunt aboard El Pescador. This fly-down, fly-back 4-day adventure runs July 16-20 and is limited to six anglers and costs $2,499 per person. Previous success on these trips with El Pescador made adding another one a no brainer. Anglers are picked up at the airport and brought to Marina Vallarta, and they have the option of staying up to two nights at a 5,000-square foot penthouse at Shangrila on the beach across from the marina at no charge, except for incidentals. Amenities include a full gym, jacuzzi, steam room, masseuse and the largest pool in Puerto Vallarta. A fishing license must be obtained stateside, and a tackle list will be provided at the time of booking. If you do not have personal tackle, arrangements can be made to use the Captain’s gear. Sign-up online, call or email Dylan Hartnett at (949) 366-0921; dylanh@wonews.com.
