SAN CLEMENTE – The fourth-annual Western Outdoor News writing contest kicks off on New Year’s Day, and there are some pretty sweet prizes for first, second and third place.

The writing contest started as a way to give you something to do during that whole spring of 2020 pandemic thing when there wasn’t a whole lot else to do, but it was such a success, we just kept it going.

Submissions could be a memorable fishing or hunting trip, technique based or any number of outdoor angles you’d like to hit. In year’s past, the writing contest has led to future writing opportunities with WON.

The first place winner will score a Penn Fathom Lever-Drag 2-speed (25NLDII) reel and an assortment of lures, line and terminal tackle. Second and third place will pick up similar assortments of their own.

Writing contest submissions should be in the neighborhood of 600 to 1,200 words, give or take, along with 1 to 3 photos with caption information. Send all contest submissions to Editors@wonews.com beginning Jan. 1, and be sure to put “Writing Contest” in the subject line of all submissions.

A PENN FATHOM Lever Drag 2-speed reel is up for grabs in the WON writing contest which runs from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28.
